World Press Photo; presenting the top notch collection of photojournalism from around the world. We are told to choose one winning photograph and explain briefly about the picture. Next, we are told to select one photograph that we think should win the prize.
For the first part of the exercise, I selected the first prize winner in the Sports category.
About the picture:
1) It is the capture of Ireland's first goal in a qualifier for finals of the UEFA men's under-17 football championships.
2) The capture of the moment when the ball just passes the white line; indicating a score.
3) The momentarily freeze of the players in their actions : player falling to the ground, player already fallen to the ground, goalkeeper preparing to dive for the ball, player running for the ball and also player just stare blankly as the ball crosses the line.
4) At that same momentary freeze, all the player's eyes are focused on the ball.
For the second part of the exercise, I will choose the second prize winning photograph to be in the first place instead.
Reasons:
1) That split second moment when the Jamaican runner crosses the finish line
2) The facial expression of the 3 runners clearly seen
3) The body gesture of glory by the Jamaican runner, in the centre with his hands up in the air, while the runner on his left and right, shows disappointment with their hands pointed down to the ground.
4) The colour of the winner's outfit that makes him stands out more as a subject and the second and third place runner blends more to the background.
